With summer sunshine comes renewal and that includes home decorating. Could my modest budget quench my thirst to add some new color to the bedroom? I decided a couple of new pillows might be affordable. Well I shopped till I dropped, I even stopped by the fabric store, I just could not find that ‘je ne sais quoi’ (translation: that elusive something). I turned to one of my favorite Blogs Pillows A-La-Mode for inspiration. She’s even made a pillow out of a hoodie, brilliant right?
I immediately set off to the second-hand shop, were I found the ‘Holy Grail’ of summer attire, a vintage Hawaiian shirt.
Heavenly right, can I get a hallelujah? I just adore the sporty sailboats floating on azure seas and the breezy palms surrounding the pink resort next to the beach. Oh, take me there. What about those summery phrases like: ‘relax on the island’, ‘holiday fun’ and ‘catch some rays’ it practically screams sunshine!
With a little know how and some cheery yellow picnic cotton I was able to sew two pillows for under $20.00 (re-purposed my feather inserts). I used the back of the shirt for one pillow and the front of the shirt for the other.
I really like them with my vintage pink chenille bedspread. It’s so cozy Petals can’t keep her eyes open. Hello…..kitty, photographer at work here. I think the old pocket adds a little whimsy don’t you?
With my pillow project a success, I started reading one of my books from the charity sale, An Anthology of Verse, Oxford University Press 1964. I found this lovely poem by Robert Bridges
Yes, ‘I too will something make and joy in the making’. I think this may be the start of something wonderful, but until then, this is what you can make from the shirt off your back.
Love this post! Great idea, to use the shirt for new pillows! LOVE them!!!

Thank you so much. They’re actually on my bed today. I switch things around depending on the spread I’m using. With two black cats, I do bedding often 😀

The shirt was a mere 7.99 and your right, because they are ‘one of a kind’, I will love them more. I’m also sewing a kitty pillow for my little Diva’s, it’s so cute I’d like my bed to be just like it HA

Hi Katherine, I wanted to acknowledge you by name but didn’t see it on your About Page. Well I’m having the best time following your posts. I’m sure I will never do projects as fast as you but I know there’s always inspiration to be found at Pillows A-La-Mode.
