Have I told you that Alberta is Canada’s sunniest province? We are indeed. On average, we get 321 days of sunshine per year in Edmonton, topped only by our friendly rival to the south, Calgary. On average, they enjoy 333 sunny days each year.
Today was no exception. A beautiful, crisp day, just perfect for a walk. I followed the sun downtown to Churchill square to see what was shaping up for our special guest, Sir Paul McCartney.
Sir Paul, will be in Edmonton for two amazing SOLD OUT shows, November 28th & 29th. The city is buzzing. A splashy event will take place in front of City Hall, at Churchill Square. Organizers have set up the square with all sorts of tributes. We tried to get tickets online when he announced a stop in Edmonton, but they sold out in 12 seconds. How is that even possible?
It’s really exciting to see these Iconic silhouettes crossing 102A Avenue, re-dedicated as Abbey Lane.
Edmontonian’s are invited to come together in the Square, starting tonight at 7pm. You can join the sing-along to your favourite Paul McCartney tunes. I’ve already hinted at my favourite. Did you ‘work it out‘? It’s ‘I’ll Follow The Sun‘. I also love ‘Across The Universe’ from their Yellow Submarine Album. It was actually written by the brilliant John Lennon, but credited to Lennon-McCartney. I think it’s just perfection.
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind,
Possessing and caressing me.
Jai guru de va om
Nothing’s gonna change my world,
Nothing’s gonna change my world.
That call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Jai guru de va om
Nothing’s gonna change my world,
Nothing’s gonna change my world.
Through my open views inviting and inciting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a
Million suns, it calls me on and on
Across the universe
Jai guru de va om
Nothing’s gonna change my world,
Nothing’s gonna change my world.
I also flat wore out my Venus and Mars album by Wings. Remember ‘Magneto & Titanium Man’? I love the piano and the way it’s a whole fantastic story. I sure hope he plays those at the show, because…..
CHECK IT OUT…….
I know, freaking out!!!
While enjoying the sights downtown, I just wandered into Tickets On The Square and magic ensued.
Boomdee: “hi, I thought I’d pop in and ask a completely ridiculous question”
(By her smile, I got the feeling I wasn’t the first person to have said that to her lately)
Boomdee: “what are the chances that some benevolent ticket god will smile down on me today and help me see
Sir Paul McCartney?”
(She looked at me empathetically)
Ticket Goddess: “not too good, but I’ll check for you”.
Well to both our surprise, two tickets popped up….waaaaaayyyy back, back, back row.
I’m two feet off the ground! We will be two, of the lucky 28,000, attending these history making shows in Edmonton. People will be talking about these shows for years, and now we’ll have our own story to tell. You my friends, heard it here first!
With all the giant North American cities Sir Paul could have toured, what were the chances of picking Edmonton? Even more amazing, what were the chances of getting tickets to a show that sold out in 12 seconds? Infinitesimal perhaps, but I’m awfully glad that I followed the sun.
Edmonton looks like a really fun place! I don’t mind the cold as long as it’s sunny.

Sometimes, Easterners (Toronto and Quebec) don’t want to move here for work because they think there’s nothing to do, no culture. But we have a symphony, a lot of summer festivals, sports teams, a busy art community and lots of sunshine (except on snow days). I guess we’re all partial to where we grow up. Thanks for your message tonight!

SQEEEEEEEEL !!!!! yes sooo exciting. I will try and get some pictures of the people around me enjoying the show. Jims figuring it out right now on his Blackberry since I’m like Wilma Flintstone and have a very very old cell phone. I’ve got to get an update. It’s one of those “but it still works” things. Silly.
Thanks for your enthusiasm, it’s infectious!! OMG, if I actually had the opportunity to say hello, I’d probably be gobsmacked (proper english for stunned) and unable to utter a word….
“the sun is up, the sky is blue, it’s beautiful and so are you” Beatles ‘Dear Prudence’ (John Lennon gave the world so much).

One of the perks of being downtown the stadium (indoors of course) is only 3 stations away. We will have to bundle as thousands will be riding because of the snow….we’re a hardy bunch, but I’m sure Sir Paul is thinking ‘OMG’..ha.

I have that on my Ipod too. When I was in High school, we’d listen to that on the way to the A&W (drive in burger joint)….just all us girls…singing our lungs out. Thanks, we didn’t think we would get tickets either. A complete fluke…have a great day! 😀
